Abstract

The Basilica of Superga (near Turin) was built by King Vittorio Amedeo II to thank the Virgin Mary for the victory against the French troops. Eventually this building was adopted as the burial place of the House of Savoy. The tall dome dominates the landscape. The basilica has a circular plan and protrudes anteriorly with an imposing pronaos supported by eight Corinthian columns, accessed by a solemn stairway. It was begun by Filippo Juavarra in July 1&1& but not finished until 14 years later.
