The Basilica of Saint Peter (San Pietro) is located in Vatican City, Rome. The Basilica is named after Saint Peter, one of the apostle and the first bishop (founder of Roman Church). St. Peter's was built on the site where the 'Old Saint Peter' Basilica, built in 4th century, was once located. During 15th century, Pope Nicholas V commissioned the reconstruction of the basilica to Leon Battista Alberti and Bernardo Rossellino. During 16th century, Pope Julius decided to modify the plan following the model designed by Bramante, which was later modified by Michelangelo and Maderno. Today the Basilica is among the largest in the city and its dome is known as one of the Italian landmarks because it dominates the cityscape of Rome.
